“In a perfect world, life would be a continuous party with your
favorite friends, food, drink and music. But it's crazy out there, so
try to take it easy while enjoying life as much as possible. That’s
the message we communicate through our music,” says J-Bomb, one
of three mc/vocalists who find creative expression as part of a band that
calls itself P.I.C. Inspired by artists as varied as Run DMC, Beastie
Boys, Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, De la Soul, David Byrne and Fishbone,
P.I.C. possess a true cross-genre audience appeal and so completely embrace
a full-on musical amalgam of hip hop, punk, funk mambo and ska, they actually
named their CMJ-Charted #1 debut album, hiphopunkfunkmamboska!
J-Bomb and his fellow P.I.C crew, Horny Jeff (saxophone), Rice (keyboards),
Sulu (mc, trumpet), Un-G Wasmabati (mc, DJ), Rick Fingers (bass) and Mark
Concerto (guitar), will headline the bill at NYC’s Arlene Grocery
on Saturday, May 3rd, in conjunction with the release of their brand new
CD, Sexy Picnic, on Riding Mower Records.
Sexy Picnic reflects the crazy, frenetic, high energy good-time antics
of a P.I.C live show, with a ten track dance party loaded with the bands’
many aural trademarks like bright bursts of horns, sultry Latin rhythms,
funk-a-licious beats, smooth jazz and infectious grooves. While you rock
out to the Sly Stone-inspired, tribal funk of the title track, and get
in the mood to the rumba beat of “Sugar Plan,” let P.I.C.
school you with a phonics lesson on why “G-H-O-T-I spells ‘Fish’”
(“Ghoti”). At the Sexy Picnic, everything sounds delicious.
Based in New York City, P.I.C came together in 1992, after first appearing as a fictitious band in a tongue-in-cheek, NYU film school mockumentary about a rap crew with ridiculous, often demented opinions on music and race, and an incredibly silly stage show. Film cast members Sulu, Rice and Un-G decided to endorse these absurd views -- collectively known as "P.I." (Ask the band what that stands for) -- and take them to the musical stage. Thus, P.I.C. was born!
Curious fans can also catch P.I.C as the house band for the sixth season of the long-running stand-up comedy showcase, Premium Blend, which airs on Comedy Central every Saturday at 9 PM eastern. The gig provides P.I.C the opportunity to expose their hilarious and energetic live show to a national audience as they perform tunes from both their wildly successful debut album, hiphopunkfunkmamboska, and the hot new Sexy Picnic.
OffOffOff.com raves about P.I.C., commenting; "You
could classify the music as hip-hop, but unlike most rap it's backed by
a kickass live band, combining the funky musicianship of Tower of Power,
the one-big-happy-family spirit of Sly and the Family Stone, the unpredictable
stylistic onslaught of Fishbone and the easygoing rap attitude of De La
Soul."
The Members of P.I.C. are available for their own unique brand of interviews.
