Batman Wall Mirror

March 31st, 2011

I had to look at this photo for a few seconds before I saw past the ornate, neo-Rococo frame to recognize the familiar Batman icon making up the actual mirror itself. Very cool! Created out of hand-molded, painted gypsum from a 2008 design by Stanislav Katz, this conversation-starting mirror comes standard in black, vintage gold [...]

Happy Birthday, Herb Alpert!

March 31st, 2011

Herb Alpert, co-founder of A&M Records and trumpet player extraordinaire, was born on this day, March 31 in 1935. Let us celebrate Herb’s Birthday by enjoying this 1966 video of Herb and the Tijuana Brass performing “A Taste Of Honey” on the beach! It starts rocking at the 19 second point, so hang in there. [...]

NYC Subway 1986

March 30th, 2011

I moved to Manhattan in the fall of 1988, but having made perhaps a half dozen trips to NYC between 1979 and the year I became a resident, I sure do remember when the subway looked like this. Ah, sweet nostalgia. You can almost smell the urine. This video, shot by Danish tourist “Railroad Pacific,” [...]

Happy Birthday, Jim “Dandy” Mangrum!

March 30th, 2011

“Jim Dandy to the Res-cue!” Black Oak Arkansas vocalist and charismatic frontman, James “Jim Dandy” Mangrum celebrates his 63rd Birthday today! Surely it is no secret to anyone who saw BOA in their prime back in the 70s that David Lee Roth used Mangrum as the boilerplate for his own crotch-grabbing, libidinous fronting of Van [...]

Moat Bed: A Cool Thing to Sleep On

March 29th, 2011

Image Source I’m not nuts about the orange paint job in this room – and the ‘fondant-like,’ colorless linens should be illegal – but I sure do love the idea of sleeping on a bed that’s suspended over a small body of water. Sleeping is one of my favorite activities and I am sure that [...]

March 28th, 2011

For just 3 short days late next week, Spoke Art will present Quentin vs. Coen – An art show tribute to the films of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. This exhibit is a follow-up to last year’s highly successful Bad Dads – a tribute to Wes Anderson. I’m sorry I missed that. For Quentin [...]

NYC’s Lair Lounge Mixes Nightlife Vibe with Gourmet Eats

March 27th, 2011

When dining out in NYC with a group of more than, say, two people, it can be challenging to find a venue that meets the expectations of both those seeking delicious food and those more interested in experiencing a hot, “night life” scene. Lair Restaurant and Lounge, which opened in Nolita last October, aims to [...]

March 26th, 2011

Geraldine Ferraro, who in 1984 became the first woman named to a major-party presidential ticket, has passed away today after a long battle with cancer. She was 75 years old. Oh man, I am too sad to even talk about this right now. Rest in peace brave lady.

Spitball App For The iPhone and Facebook: Let the Spitting Begin!

March 26th, 2011

I don’t own a “Smart Phone” (yet) because I don’t actually have any desire to be connected to the Internet every waking second of my life, but I do enjoy using the occasional Facebook App, just so I can appear to be somewhat “in the know” and hip (key word: appear). Here’s an app I [...]
