I Like Jerry’s Shirt In This Photo

Jerry Garcia, guitarist and songwriter for the Grateful Dead and undeniably one of contemporary rock music’s most enduring pop culture icons, would have been 67 years old today. Whenever I think of Jerry, I can’t help but also be reminded of my good friend Vince, who has always been such a huge Dead Head. Sadly, Jerry actually passed away on Vince’s birthday, August 9th, in 1995. How much does that suck? Today is also a day to remember the late Tommy Bolin, guitarist for the James Gang and Deep Purple, who died of a heroin overdose at the very young age of just 25, and who today would have celebrated his 58th Birthday. Last but not least, Joe Elliot of Def Leppard turns 50. Def Leppard can still kick any band’s ass live.
